Coach Burrell - Year 10 Reflection

So, I meant to post this yesterday, however, with the huge amount of items I needed to complete before the day was over, I never got around to it. I wanted to post this on Facebook, but my post would've been entirely too long. Yes, this will be somewhat lengthy... please bear with me.

Yesterday marked the beginning of my 10th season as a high school wrestling coach, and my 2nd as a Head Coach of the sport. It is crazy to think that nearly a decade ago I started this little gig as a somewhat-naive little 21 year old fresh out of college that thought he would start coaching just to "knock off the rust on some youngins."

Now, to say that I wouldn't trade this position for the world would be an understatement...

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending the wedding ceremony & reception for one of my former wrestlers and his high-school sweetheart. His younger brother, also one of my formers, was his best man and spoke during the toast. I couldn't help but hold back a few tears when I heard his speech, where he mentioned how participating in the sport of Wrestling helped him strengthen his bond with his brother, and how it changed the both of their lives for the better. At random moments during the reception, I would meet a new relative, or become re-acquainted with a member of the family that I already knew... and the only thing they would talk to me about was how much of an impact on those two young men I was. Nothing regarding the future... nothing regarding how much of a great time we were having at the reception. I. Was. Speechless.

The notion I received years ago that made me realize why I really began coaching in the first place was solidified tenfold on Sunday afternoon. This sport has given me an opportunity to have a positive influence towards the young men (and women) I serve that I never knew I had the ability to deliver. I always believed that I have done my job if I can just get across to one person how this sport gives you a newer perspective on the disciplines of perseverance, leadership, and hard work. I'm beyond blessed that my God has given me the strength to continue this opportunity for a 10th year.

Last year, I walked into the main doors of Harford Tech for the first time, where I would be immediately offered the chance to create my own brand and implement my own vision into a program looking to rebuild. This year, I start the season 57+ dreamers strong, knowing that the lessons that I've learned from those I was chosen to teach & coach in the past have properly prepared me to pull the potential out of each and every one of these student-athletes who lace up their shoes on my practice mat.

To the Parents of Harford Tech's 2017-2018 Wrestlers... thank you for trusting my staff & I with your precious gems. We will do our best to serve them to the best of our ability.

To the alumni of Harford Tech, Aberdeen, and Overlea High Schools that I have coached in the past.... a huge THANK YOU (probably one that is way too big to fit on this screen). You guys have taught me WAY more about this life and what I do than I could've ever taught you.

With that said.... #GOCOBRAS!
